Chavah's Talmud CornerThe Talmud (B'rachot, Chapter 5, 31a3) tells the story of Rav Kahana and Rav Shimi bar Ashi, who were traveling in Babylonia when Rav Kahana, obviously impressed with the local scenery, asked his companion, "Master, is it true hat people say that these Babylonian palm trees have existed from the time of Adam, the first man, until now?" Rav Shimi tactfully guides the discussion toward matters of Halachah, recounting an earlier Rabbinic discussion of Adam and the lands that he settled. Another Amora uses this interchange to illustrate the point that 'a person should not take leave of his friend except amid discussion of a matter of halachah.' I think this admonition to remain focused on the great teachings of our tradition is especially relevant at this time of year, when so many of us go into 'tourist mode,' focusing on the scenery instead of exercising our minds to think of what is most important in our lives. It's worth the extra effort to engage friends and family in deep, probing conversations about our values and those of our community. Try it -- you might be surprised what you learn!
